When it comes to purchasing licenses for Windows there are a number of different channels that you can purchase through. The most common license types are Retail (FPP (Full Packaged Product)), OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), and Volume Licensing. Each Windows license type confers rights and imposes restrictions based on the Microsoft Software License Terms.
How to Determine if Windows License Type is OEM, Retail, or Volume
- Retail License: This when you buy a Full Packaged Product (FPP), commonly known as a “boxed copy”, of Windows from a retail merchant or purchases Windows online from the Microsoft Store. Product keys can be transferred to another PC.
- OEM License: Product keys are issued by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and are not-for-resale and may not be transferred to another computer. They may, however, be transferred with the computer if the computer is transferred to new ownership. If the OEM PC came preinstalled with Windows 8 or Windows 10, then the product key will be embedded in the UEFI firmware chip.
- Volume License: They are issued by organizations for use on client computers associated in some way with the organization. Volume license keys may not be transferred with the computer if the computer changes ownership.
How do you know if you have Product Key for your Windows?
Just click the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen and select Control Panel> System and Security> System. Under Windows Activation, you will see your Product ID.
In Windows 10, you can find Product ID in Settings> System> About. It is not your Product Key, this is the ID created in the settings for you.

How to check if the computer has been activated copyright?
1: View information on Properties
Very simple, right click on This PC (Computer) => select Properties to see the information.
If there is a Windows is activated and there is another Product ID.
Otherwise, if the Windows is not activated and the Product ID range is Available.
Note: You note that the Product ID is different from the Product Key. Product ID is a sequence of characters created during Windows installation.
Method 2: Use the cmd command
Execute: Open cmd with Run as administrator => next at cmd window, enter command slmgr / xpr => press enter.
If Windows is enabled it will display the message shown below “The machine is permanently activated”.
Otherwise, if Win is not enabled, it will display with the message “Error: Product key not found.”
